‘백신’의 유래 | The Origin of 'Vaccine'

컴퓨터 바이러스를 탐지하고 제거하는 소프트웨어(안티바이러스, Antivirus)를 ‘백신(Vaccine)’이라 부르는 건 우리나라만의 독특한 표현입니다.

In Korea, people call antivirus (software that detects and removes computer viruses) a "Vaccine" program.

 

1988년 의대 박사 과정에 있었던 안철수 창업자가 컴퓨터 바이러스 ‘브레인’을 ‘치료’하기 위해 개발한 국내 최초의 안티바이러스 프로그램에 ‘백신’이라는 이름을 붙인 것에서 비롯되어, 훗날 이 표현이 굳어진 것입니다.

This term originated in 1988, when our founder Dr. Ahn Cheol-soo, then a medical Ph.D student, developed Korea’s first antivirus to “treat” the computer virus called Brain and named it “Vaccine.” Over time, this expression became firmly established in Korea.

 

이후 Vaccine II, Vaccine III 등과 같이 이름 뒤에 버전 숫자를 붙여 오다 현재의 ‘V3’라는 이름이 되었습니다. 

The name has eventually evolved into “V3” as version numbers were added to subsequent releases — such as Vaccine II and Vaccine III.

한편 1995년 당시 한백진 단국대 교수와 주영철 수원여자전문대학(現 수원여자대학) 교수는 ‘어떤 바이러스라도 물리치는 강력한 주사기’라는 의미를 담은 V3 로고를 무상 기증하기도 했습니다.

Meanwhile, in 1995, professors Han Baek-jin of Dankook University and Joo Young-chul of Suwon Women’s College (now Suwon Women’s University) even donated the V3 logo, which symbolized “a powerful syringe that can defeat any virus.”
