정직한 보안의 길 | The Path of Honest Cybersecurity

새천년을 앞둔 1999년, 세상은 ‘Y2K 대재앙’으로 떠들썩했습니다. 컴퓨터가 2000년을 ’공공(00)년’으로 인식해 1900년과 혼동할 것이라는 문제가 제기되었고, 금융·교통·통신 등 주요 시스템이 치명적인 오류를 일으킬 것이라는 공포가 확산되었습니다.

As the new millennium approached in 1999, the world was abuzz with the “Y2K bug.” There was widespread fear that computers would recognize the year 2000 as "00,"confusing it with 1900. This sparked panic that key systems in finance, transportation and telecommunications would suffer fatal errors.

 

여러 보안 업체는 이를 ‘밀레니엄 버그’라 부르며, 경쟁적으로 Y2K 바이러스 퇴치 프로그램을 출시했습니다. 하지만 안랩(당시 안철수컴퓨터바이러스연구소)은 달랐습니다. 안랩은 면밀한 분석 끝에 ’큰 문제는 발생하지 않을 것‘이라는 결론을 내렸고, “Y2K 바이러스 위협에 대한 지나친 과장은 오히려 부작용을 낳을 수 있다”는 내용의 보도자료를 배포합니다. 

Many cybersecurity companies called this issue the "Millennium Bug" and competitively released Y2K antivirus programs. However, AhnLab took a different approach. After careful analysis, AhnLab concluded that "no major problems would occur." AhnLab even distributed a press release stating that "exaggerating the Y2K virus threat could cause unintended side effects."

 

있지도 않은 위협을 부풀려 고객의 불안을 자극해 제품을 판매하고 싶지는 않았습니다. 눈앞의 ‘이익‘보다, ‘양심‘과 ‘공익’이라는 가치를 선택한 것입니다.

AhnLab did not want to exaggerate a non-existent threat and exploit customer anxiety to sell products. AhnLab prioritized the value of "conscience" and "public trust" over short-term profit.

 

그리고 2000년 1월 1일, 안랩이 예고했던 대로 모두가 걱정했던 재앙 대신 평범한 일상이 이어졌습니다.

Then, on January 1, 2000, just as AhnLab predicted, the feared catastrophe never came — instead, life went on as usual.
