안철수를 향한 SOS | An SOS to Founder Ahn
1988년 7월, 안철수는 세계 최초의 컴퓨터 바이러스 ‘브레인‘ 치료법을 <마이크로소프트웨어>지에 게재했습니다. 이를 계기로 같은 해 8월부터는 마이크로소프트웨어 취재부와 함께 ‘바이러스 방역 센터’를 운영하게 됩니다.
In July 1988, Founder Ahn Cheol-soo published a treatment for "Brain," the world’s first computer virus, in <Microsoftware> magazine. This led him to operate the "Virus Prevention Center" in collaboration with the Microsoftware editorial team, starting that August.
사용자들이 바이러스 샘플이 담긴 플로피 디스켓을 잡지사로 보내오면, 안철수는 이를 분석해 백신 프로그램을 개발했습니다. 바이러스의 실체를 파악하기 위해 이메일과 전화 문의에 직접 응대하는 것은 물론, 때로는 사용자의 집에 방문하는 일도 있었습니다.
When users sent floppy disks containing virus samples to the magazine’s office, Dr. Ahn analyzed them and developed antivirus. To better understand the nature of viruses, he personally responded to inquiries via email and phone, and sometimes even visited users' home.
이렇게 개발한 백신을 다시 디스켓에 저장해 잡지사에 전달하면, 백신을 필요로 하는 사용자들이 이를 복사해 갔습니다.
After developing each antivirus, he saved it onto a floppy disk and sent it back to the magazine’s office, where users could copy it.
낮에는 의학 연구를 이어가야 하는 바쁜 일상 속에서도 안철수는 도움이 필요한 사람들의 목소리에 귀를 기울였습니다. 덕분에 국내 사용자들은 예루살렘, 미켈란젤로 등의 컴퓨터 바이러스가 유행했을 때마다 백신을 무료로 제공받을 수 있었습니다.
Despite his busy schedule as a medical researcher during the day, he always listened closely to those who needed help. Thanks to his efforts, Korean users were able to use free antivirus whenever computer viruses like Jerusalem or Michelangelo were spreading.
